The scariest comic book villains of all time

Lobo was born on the Utopian planet of Czarnia. Unfortunately for them, the foul-mouth brawler’s idea of a perfect world is one covered in bruises and blood. He wiped out his entire civilization and made himself the last of his people. Considering his name means “he who devours your entrails and thoroughly enjoys it” in his native tongue, perhaps they shouldn’t have been too surprised. Lobo took his predilection for murder and mayhem along with his rocket-fueled motorcycle and went on to become the best bounty hunter in the galaxy.

Solomon Grundy

Grundy was a corrupt man named Cyrus Gold until his untimely death in Slaughter Swamp. When Grundy dies, he eventually rises again, emerging from the depths of his original resting place in the swamp However, there’s a twist to this otherwise dependable cycle. When he’s reborn, his personality often changes. Sometimes he returns a mindless monster, destroying everything in his path. Other times, he’s reborn with a high level of intelligence, granting him a deadly combination of brains and brawn.

Doomsday was originally created on Krypton as part of a deranged scientist’s quest to create the perfect hunter. The creature was subjected to cruel and terrible experiments—killed and cloned thousands upon thousands of times—a process that allowed his body to adapt natural defenses against whatever previously had bested him. Through this sort of rapid evolution, Doomsday became an unstoppable, nearly indestructible creature of violence and death that knew only hate and sought to kill everything in its path.

The Joker

The Joker revels in creating chaos and destroying lives, believing that life’s a big joke and psychotically demonstrating that in a moment, it can all change. Not much is known about his past, but his acts during the present are what define the Joker as one of the greatest threats to our heroes and the people they’ve sworn to protect. He’s killed Robin, crippled Batgirl, and tortured and murdered countless people throughout the DC Universe—all just for a laugh.

Homicidal maniac Cletus Kasady was serving 11 consecutive prison terms when an opportunity for early parole presented itself in the form of his new cellmate: Eddie Brock, human host to a symbiotic costume once worn by the wisecracking, super hero known as Spider-Man. As anticipated, the Venom symbiote attempted to free Brock by inciting a destructive jailbreak. Unknown to its human host, the alien was pregnant. It gave birth during the disastrous rescue. Left behind in the midst of the riot that ensued, the symbiote’s spawn bonded with Kasady. Embarking on a citywide killing spree, Carnage was confronted by Spider-Man. However, Spider-man’s abilities failed to subdue the thrice-strong serial killer.

Killer Croc

Killer Croc, born Waylon Jones, is a criminal and nemesis of Batman. He was born with an extreme form of the medical condition Epidermolytic hyperkeratosis, which caused his appearance to develop progressively into that of a crocodile. The disease that Killer Croc is afflicted with seems to be some form of regressive atavism, meaning he has inherited some of the traits of ancestral species of the human race. His skin has hardened to the point where it is invulnerable to most forms of abrasion and even high caliber weapons fired from a distance. He possesses superhuman strength and he is stronger than Batman, whose strength is at the peak human level. A side effect of this condition seems to be that over time the primal reptilian part of his brain gains more control of his psyche.
