Senior Eylan Goodwyn goes up for a shot against a Spring Hill player at their game at SHS, Nov. 19.

The boys’ basketball team will head to the Big Sandy tournament the weekend of Dec. 6-8 after coming off a big tournament victory against state-ranked La Poyner in the championship of the New Summerfield tournament, 58-53, on Nov. 15-17. The team also beat New Summerfield (46-42) and Slocum (69-53) on the road to the final trophy.

“Last year, we came and got second in this tournament and the Big Sandy tournament, so one of our team goals coming into this season was to WIN a tournament,” Coach Colby Carr said. “I felt like the guys were really focused and gave tremendous effort in all three of our games, which were against three very good teams. Knocking off the tournament host, New Summerfield, in their brand new coliseum in front a hostile crowd was a gritty performance and a game we’ll all remember. But, even that can’t top coming back from 17 points down to beat LaPoynor, who was undefeated and ranked #1 in 1A, to win the championship game. I’m so proud of the guys for showing such toughness and for not giving up when things looked bleak. They definitely deserved to win that thing.”

The Cardinals’ season record is 5-2 with wins against Atlanta (56-52) and Henderson (69-58) and losses to Jefferson (47-59) and Spring Hill (60-89). They play Pine Tree Dec. 4 at Pine Tree.

In the Big Sandy tournament, the Cardinals are scheduled to play Winnsboro at 3 p.m. on Thursday and Hughes Springs at 1:30 on Friday along with two guaranteed games on Saturday, teams to be determined.
