Senior Travion Oliver goes up strong against a West Rusk player during the final district game of the season Feb. 12. The boys will start playoff competition Tuesday, Feb. 19 at LeTourneau University.

Sabine varsity boys basketball team clinched the District 16-3A championship Feb.12 with an 82-44 victory over West Rusk in the final district game of the season. The team finished district by winning 12 games in a row, and players and coaches are now preparing for playoffs against first-round opponent Ore City. That game is set for Feb. 19 at LeTourneau University with the tip0ff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

“I’m very proud of the guys for bouncing back from our early setback against Troup and winning our last 12 district games to finish as outright district champions,” Coach Colby Carr said. “When you’re the best team, everyone knows they have to play their best to beat you, and we got every team’s best shot every single night. That’s a hard thing to overcome, but we train every day to be able to overcome chaos. That way when we find ourselves in the midst of chaos, we can look at each other and smile because we’ve been there before and we’re built to overcome it. The guys have grown immensely since the start of the season and I’m happy they got the result they wanted in being District Champions. Now, we prepare for bigger and better things. This was just the first step.”
