Boys basketball bi-district champs

The boys' basketball team wins the bi-district championship, 79-42, against Ore City.

The Boys’ Varsity Basketball team will be playing Mt. Vernon in Area competition March 22 at Rains High School gymnasium with tip-off at 7:30 p.m. That will be the second of a doubleheader with Big Sandy and playing Bland High School there at 6 p.m. The winner of this bout will move on to the Regional Quarterfinals.

The boys defeated their first-round opponents Ore City, 79-42, Feb. 19 at LeTourneau University, improving their record to 24-9. In their 13th consecutive win, the team caused 30 turnovers which led to 20 points for the Cardinals. High scorer in the game was senior Travion Oliver who racked up 29 points and 7 steals.  Senior Eylan Goodwyn was also in double figures with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists. Eleven players scored during the game with 19 points coming off the bench.

“I am extremely proud of the effort and intensity the guys played with and I felt like they were relentless all game,” Coach Colby Carr said. “In basketball, there are only a few things you can control no matter what. Shots aren’t always going to fall. You’re not always going to execute to perfection. You’re not always going to be able to jump the highest, be the fastest or the strongest. But, you can always control your energy and effort. Our goal is to play so hard people feel the need to come tell us about it after the game. When you make that your primary goal, you can cut loose and just let the chips fall where they may without worrying about the other stuff. We achieved our goal against Ore City. Now, we’ll just try to continue that as we move forward.”
